GROUP TOURS & WORKSHOPS
Here at Caverns of Sonora we offer special guided tours and workshops at special prices for groups of twelve or more. Tax exempt rates are also available for schools, scouts, church groups, etc… These tours and workshops are not available on a daily basis and advance reservations are required in order to set up and staff these activities.
Group Tour
Our Group Tours are offered two ways in order to better accommodate group time schedules. One tour covers approximately 2 miles of the cavern and lasts about 1 hour and 45 minutes. This tour begins with the history of the cavern’s discovery and formation; then continues through the entire active section of the cave. The other tour covers approximately 1 mile of the cavern and lasts about 1 hour. This tour also covers cave history, but views only about half of the active rooms in the cave.

Underground Classroom
A great interactive class in the Caverns Hilton Room offers hands-on activities such as a fossil dig, and a caving adventure. A 20 minute slide show compares the geology of this cavern with others, and discusses aspects of cave biology, paleontology, and speleology. This classroom is most appropriate for grades K through 6th, and lasts about 1 hour.

Cave Safety and Ascending
An interactive class in single rope techniques. This class teaches the use of specialized vertical caving gear to ascend a climbing rope for about 40 feet. Working with this equipment is explained while you are rigging for the ascent. This is a team building event.

Orienteering Workshop
Each team will use a compass to complete a precharted course inside the park. This same principle is applied when mapping a cave. Teamwork is essential for the completion of this course, and competition among teams is encouraged. This workshop takes approximately 15 minutes per team.

Gemstone Panning
Gemstone Panning is great fun for all ages. We have small and large gemstone bags, as well as fossil and emerald bags. Each bag is guaranteed to contain specimens, so pick one that suits your interests and enjoy the fun. |
